All custom hearing aids and earmolds first require an impression of the ear so that the manufacturer can fabricate the custom hearing instruments. Traditionally those impressions were made using a two-part silicone material injected into the ear canal and allowed to cure. This takes the shape of the patient’s outer ear. The process is time consuming, messy, and sometimes uncomfortable for the patient.
Since January of 2021 Dr. Jabbour has been utilizing the Otoscan 3D Ear Scanning system. Ear scanning is a technology used to create digital models of an individual’s outer ear to manufacture custom hearing solutions. Ear scanning is superior to traditional impressions for several reasons:
Accuracy
Ear scanning uses advanced technology to create a highly detailed and accurate digital model of an individual’s ear. This can help to ensure that the hearing aid fits properly and is tailored to the individual’s unique ear anatomy. As with anything custom made, fit is always the highest priority.
Comfort
Traditional impressions can be uncomfortable and even painful for some individuals, particularly those with sensitive ears or ear canal abnormalities. In contrast, ear scanning is a painless process completed in approximately one minute per ear.
Speed
Since we send scans electronically to the manufacturer, production can begin same day. This has cut wait times by nearly 50% which means you’ll be hearing better sooner.
Eco-Friendly
We have eliminated the need for materials such as plastic or silicone as well as the packaging and shipping of traditional impressions. This reduces waste and makes the entire process more environmentally friendly.
Versatility
Since the scan is a digital file, it can be used multiple times to make a variety of devices from hearing aids to earmolds, and hearing protection. If a device is lost or damaged, the scan on file can be used to duplicate the original saving the patient time and effort.
